Are you looking for a spectacular site to visit while on a tour in the Northern side of Uganda? Then Amoropii Hot springs should not miss on your bucket list. This magnificent natural attraction is situated at around three kilometers from the popular Panyimur Fishing Village in Nebbi district on the western shores of Lake Albert.
Amoropii Hotsprings are made up of a stream whose water gets heated when it flows through a small pool on its way into the dense bushes away from a luxuriant swamp. The crate-like pool measuring up to two meters in terms of diameter contains extremely hot water, which is the hot spring that you will see when you visit the area. A number of tourists have been seen boiling eggs, green bananas (matooke) and potatoes in the two geothermal heated hot springs.
Amoropii is derived from two Alur words- Amoro meaning hot and pii meaning water hence hot water. It is believed to do miracles for the visitors due to the assumed healing powers hence the reason they are always worshiped by the locals from the nearby area and beyond. The locals who live around this natural attraction believe that the gods of Amoropii live in the Hot spring. Therefore, Barren women and people with several ailments like skin diseases (including women who want to bleach their skin or make it fairer and softer) bathe in the hot springs.
For the healing powers and miracle to work, someone needs to believe but one thing for sure is that the water of hot springs contain a number of minerals and chemicals that include calcium sulphate, sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium phosphate and lithium sulphate, to mention but a few which are naturally medical components.
Several sacrifices in form of animals are made oftenly (at least after 6 months) by the locals to appease the gods of Amoropii. The meat is left in the open and the next day it will be gone, hence believed that the gods take it. There are also beliefs that if anyone visits the hot springs without permission from the Prime Minister of Panyimur chiefdom, Misfortune such as snake bites will befall his or her family and life.
Therefore, some of the rules to be followed by visitors intending to explore the Amoropii hot springs include seeking permission and blessings from the Prime Minister of Panyimur Chiefdom-Nyipir Onen.
Besides that, Women who have ever given birth can suddenly become barren if they bath in the hot water without clearance from the Prime Minister.
For someone to be cured of any sickness or ailment due to curses by the gods of Amoropii has to first go through the Prime Minister of Panyimur Chiefdom. It is very important to understand that one can only get cured if it is the gods of Amoropii that are responsible for the curse.
Interestingly, tourists who visit this breathtaking site are always seen boiling bananas (matooke), eggs, potatoes and cassava in the two geothermal heated hot springs. You can never get hungry with such a natural source of preparing food or you don’t need to boil bathing water or visit a hot spa, because Amoropii will take care of all your needs.
